Are You Concerned About Your Teen’s Mental Health?

  • Is your teen struggling to get through the school day, make friends, or even get out of bed in the morning?

  • Have you been getting calls from their teachers about missing assignments or behavior issues?

  • Does your teen have trouble with self-esteem, confidence, or expressing their emotions?

Maybe your teen seems to dread the start of each new day. At school, they’re fighting to concentrate, feeling anxious about social situations, or wondering why tasks that come so easily to others feel so difficult for them. For neurodivergent teens, just starting or finishing assignments can be daily battles.

Some teens try to suppress their problems, upholding the image of a high-achiever while dealing with relentless self-criticism that can manifest as body image issues or chronic anxiety. Others can’t help but express their frustrations and turn to impulsive behavior as an outlet.

When Your Teen Pulls Away, You Don’t Know How To Help

Once your teen comes home from school, they might shut their bedroom door, skip family dinners, and turn to their phone or video games as a way to escape.

This isolation makes it harder to form and keep friendships. Watching your teen grow more lonely while feeling powerless to help can be deeply painful for parents.

If you don’t know how to reach your teen, counseling can give them a space to work through these emotions, build essential coping skills, and foster confidence to reconnect with others.

Every Teen Faces Difficult Seasons

Teens Feel Uncertain About Their Futures

Teens are navigating a world that has transformed dramatically since their parents were young. During the COVID-19 pandemic, lots of teens lost critical opportunities for social and emotional growth.

Social media has become a pressure cooker for peer comparisons, and cancel culture means that many teens worry about being “called out” for insignificant mistakes or misunderstandings.

Furthermore, even teens who live in safe communities are often exposed to endless streams of content and explicit videos about disturbing events happening around the world.

Tech-heavy classrooms make it tough for teens to stay on task, especially for those who are neurodivergent. All the while, the increasingly competitive college admissions process pushes teens to meet strict standards.

These demands mean that teens are losing unstructured time and miss out on chances to relax and simply enjoy being young.

Teens Often Struggle In Silence Without Support

When teens are facing challenges, they may not have the language to open up about what they’re experiencing. Teens who are grappling with questions around gender and sexuality can feel particularly reluctant to lean on their parents.

Parents sometimes mistake their teen’s symptoms for laziness. It can also be tricky for parents to strike a balance between pushing too hard or giving their teen space.

Without support, teens learn to get by with substances, avoidance, disordered eating, and other harmful coping mechanisms.

In more serious cases, this can escalate to self-harm or suicidal ideation, which makes reaching out for help even more urgent. If your teen is struggling with these high-risk behaviors, please know that you're not alone, and neither are they. Together, we can help teens gain real tools for resilience, confidence, and a stronger sense of self through therapy.

Through Counseling, Your Teen Can Learn To Thrive

We provide therapy for teenage clients ages 11 and up, meeting them exactly where they are and addressing issues like anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, and anything else they may be dealing with.

We are an affirming practice that welcomes LGBTQ+ youth for counseling.

Sometimes, parents hesitate to reach out to a therapist because they feel like they should be able to help their teen all on their own.

But if you’re unsure of how to move forward, counseling can help you bridge the gap and rebuild a relationship with your teen based on trust and understanding.

What To Expect In Teen Counseling Sessions

What To Expect In Teen Counseling Sessions

Therapy begins with building rapport.
Our counselors take time to understand your teen’s identity, strengths, and perceptions. Sometimes, teens aren’t ready to open up right away, and that’s perfectly normal. Sessions can also include age-appropriate creative activities like drawing, painting, clay molding, sand tray activities, and conversational card games, giving your teen expressive outlets to process what they’re working through if they can’t quite put it into words.

We meet every teen where they are.
Sessions start by identifying what’s creating the most distress for them at the moment. When your teen begins working with one of our counselors, their early sessions will typically focus on emotional intelligence and regulation, empowering your teen to recognize what’s happening in their body and mind and developing skills they can reach for to stay calm and grounded.

For neurodivergent teens.
Therapy includes executive functioning coaching to assist with schoolwork and let go of any shame around “falling behind.” We guide teens with ADHD, autism, and other neurodivergent diagnoses in handling the increased demands of this stage of life, which often require going beyond the strategies that worked for them in elementary school.

We also focus on improving social skills.
Setting healthy boundaries and exploring relational patterns, helping your teen understand why they show up the way they do with friends and family and what healthier versions of these connections could look like.

A safe space for deeper exploration.
Your teen can safely explore questions around identity, body image, and separating self-worth from performance. In counseling, our therapists can also address teenage suicidal ideation, substance abuse, and other high-risk behaviors.

Parents can expect periodic check-ins.
We value your collaboration and will schedule short calls with you. During the calls, we want to hear your perspective on how your teen is improving and learn about any new concerns that may be coming up at home. We’ll share updates on your teen’s progress toward the goals you’ve all agreed on together, but will not include any specific content from your teen’s individual sessions to honor their privacy and confidentiality. Note you will always be notified of anything related to safety!

Treatment Approaches for Teen Counseling

Our therapists draw from a wide range of techniques, including mindfulness, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and solution-focused approaches, equipping your teen with practical tools they can apply in real life outside of counseling sessions.

DBT provides concrete skills for coping with distress and fostering stronger relationships, while solution-focused work orients your teens towards their own strengths.

We also offer process groups for teens, which give them the chance to develop authentic connections and relational skills alongside peers who genuinely understand what they’re going through.

For many of our neurodivergent clients and those with sensory sensitivities, we also incorporate listening-based interventions like the Safe and Sound Protocol and the Integrated Listening System. These approaches support nervous system regulation as well as sensory and auditory processing.

If your teen is withdrawing or buckling under pressure, we can help them build the toolkit they need to feel self-assured and reach their goals.

But You May Still Have Questions About Teen Counseling …

What if my teen doesn’t want to go to therapy?

It’s common for teens to feel resistant towards counseling at first, and we understand that you don’t want to force them. If your teen is flatly refusing to try counseling, reach out to us, and we can help you navigate that conversation. When teens give counseling a chance, they often find themselves looking forward to it after a few sessions. For teens, there is value in having a space that’s entirely theirs.

How does confidentiality work for teen counseling?

Therapy works best when teens aren’t worried that everything they say will be shared with their parents. Privacy is part of what makes the space feel safe enough to be honest. However, because your teen is a minor, there are times parents do need to be looped in, especially if safety is a concern.

If that happens, your teen will be told. Outside of that, we work collaboratively with parents on progress and support without sharing the specifics of what your teen has shared in session.

My teen has a pretty full schedule, and I don’t know if they will have time for counseling.

We know teens and families are already carrying a lot, and therapy has to be workable to be sustainable. We offer evening and weekend appointments, as well as virtual therapy, to make support more accessible.

For many teens, virtual sessions are not just a backup option. They can actually feel like it's easier to engage in from the comfort of home. We can help you figure out what format makes the most sense for your teen and your schedule.

Your Teen's Light Can Come Back

One of the hardest parts of parenting a teenager is watching that spark start to fade, the light, the pureness of who they are, slowly going quiet. When your teen is struggling, it can bring on one of the most helpless, scared feelings you'll experience as a parent.

But that spark isn't gone. It's covered, not extinguished, and it can come back.

Imagine your teen full of life again. Happy to engage, excited about the things that used to light them up, whether that's a sport, a friendship, a sense of humor that's been missing lately, not weighed down by the pressure to perform or get it right, just able to settle into the joy of it.

This is the teen you remember. They're still in there. And with the right support, they can find their way back to walking into a room like they belong there, sure of who they are, more fully themselves than they've felt in a long time.

We want to do more than listen. We want to help your teen find their light again.
